Argentina, Cuba get direct access to Men's U23 Pan Am Cup semifinals

Guanajuato, Mexico, September 8, 2016 – Argentina and Cuba claimed direct tickets to the semifinals, while Colombia, Mexico, Dominican Republic and Chile advance to the quarterfinal phase of the Men's U23 Pan American Cup.

Mexico will play against Chile while Colombia will match-up with the Dominican Republic on Thursday at the Yerbabuena Auditorium.

Colombia beat Mexico 3-1

Colombia emerged as the leader in Pool A, after beating Mexico 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-15) in the last match of the preliminary round. 

Juan Moreno top scored for Colombia after registering 12 points, while Jose Rubio also delivered 12 markers for Mexico. Colombia covered the net well with a 15-5 blocking edge over their rivals.

Argentina beat Chile 3-0

Argentina clinched its second victory to p top Pool C. Camilo Soto's squad won in straight sets (25-18, 25-18, 25-19) over Chile.

German Johansen, Nicolas Lazo and Liam Arreche scored 16, 13 and 10 points, respectively, for Argentina.

On the Chilean side, Christopher Baeza tallied eight points. 

Argentina showed a solid blocking performance and outscored their opponents in blocks 10-4 and aces 4-1.  

Cuba beat Dominican Republic 3-0

Cuba ended up the Pool B leader after they defeated the Dominican Republic 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-19).

Osniel Malgrejo had another double-digit performance for Cuba with 15 points, while Miguel Lopez added 12. Javier Concepcion and Osniel Rendon also contributed to the Cuban squad by scoring 11 points apiece. 

Luis Rodríguez was the Dominican Republic's best scorer with 10 points. 

Meanwhile, Cuba dominated tin blocks with a 13-2 edge.
